One hundred and forty-four (a score of) tests (or skeletons) of the Sea Urchin (commonly known as a Sea Potato), Echinocardium cordatum.
An inhabitant of the lower shore. the Sea Potato is a Heart Urchin, covered, when alive, with short spines lying flat in one direction like coarse fur. and is usually found buried deep in the sand. The empty, fragile tests are abundant, cast up on sandy beaches. bleached white by the sun.
The score of tests for this piece were collected from various beaches on the Gower Peninsula, West Glamorgan.
Construction begun in July 2001 and completed in September 2003.
The work is internally lit by two 20-watt, closed, cool beam, tungsten halogen lamps.
